Installing nuVPN Gateway on Linux
Install with one command on a Linux server in the cloud or at the office.
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04.
- We recommend a dedicated virtual machine that runs no other services.
sudoprivileges.- A public IP address or port forwarding from the office router to the server.
- An installation code from the partner panel.
Installation
Section titled “Installation”-
Copy the installation command
The license page in the partner panel shows the full installation command, including your code. It looks like this:
Terminal window curl -fsSL <INSTALLER_URL> | sudo bash -s <INSTALL_TOKEN> -
Run the command on the server
The installer checks whether the VPN address range overlaps with a local network. If it does, the installer automatically switches to the first available range without asking for confirmation.
-
Save the login details
When installation is complete, the console address and an initial password are displayed. The password is shown only once, and you must change it when you first log in.
-
Open the UDP port
The UDP port is displayed when installation is complete. Allow inbound traffic to the server on this port in your cloud provider's firewall or on the office router.
Console
Section titled “Console”The console is accessible only from the internal network or through the VPN, not from the internet. The gateway does not listen for console connections on a public address.
- The console uses a certificate generated during installation. Your browser will show a warning on your first visit. Compare the fingerprint shown in the browser with the one displayed during installation.
- After three failed login attempts from the same address, that address is blocked for 24 hours. You can unblock it from the server.
Useful commands
Section titled “Useful commands”sudo nuvpn-gateway status
License status, connected devices, and console addressessudo nuvpn-gateway unban --all
Unblock addresses blocked during console loginsudo nuvpn-gateway reset-password
New initial password for the consolesudo nuvpn-gateway uninstall
Remove the gateway completely from the server
What happens during a failure
Section titled “What happens during a failure”- An outage at nuVPN does not disconnect users who are already connected, and you can still revoke access. User revocations in the local console are enforced even without a connection to nuVPN servers. You cannot generate new profiles until the service is restored.
- If the directory is unavailable, no one's access is revoked. Synchronization waits until the directory is available again.
- Restarting the server or service does not delete users. The gateway starts with the same user list, and devices reconnect.
Updates
Section titled “Updates”The gateway updates automatically. If an update fails, the gateway reverts to the previous version and devices continue working. The server administrator is responsible for updating the server's operating system.
